July First Friday

July First Friday is canceled.

Happy 4th of July!

We all deserve a holiday as we continue to get through this together. Unfortunately, we can’t have the party on Abbot Kinney yet. Due to the continuing need to contain the Coronavirus, First Friday is canceled once again.

We hope you’ll celebrate all the good things about this great experiment that is the democratic USA - where protests can be waged, voices heard, changes made. It’s a big ship that takes a long time to turn, but we remain hopeful that wise and just ways will prevail.

And we hope you’ll be wise in the ways you celebrate - with social distancing and mask wearing. Or best of all, from your living room. Here are a couple of ways to join the virtual party this year.

Los Angeles Block Party

Join the virtual Los Angeles block party this year on Saturday, July 4th. Hosted by Grand Park and the Music Center, there are musical performances, poetry, comedy and more.

The first hour can be streamed on ABC7.com beginning at 3pm; the rest of the event continues on Grand Park’s website and Facebook page, and MusicCenter.org.

A Capitol Fourth

The Washington D.C. celebration will air on your PBS station. The 2020 event includes pre-taped performances, a tribute to our nation’s workers on the front lines in the fight against the pandemic, a segment honoring the contributions of African American heroes from our nation’s past and present, and a salute to our wounded warriors and their families.

The fireworks display over our nation’s iconic skyline will be covered live during the broadcast captured by multiple cameras stationed around the city.

Visit the PBS website for details and also for lots of Independence Day history with quizzes and fun activities.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone. We hope to see you in August.
